Preston is a small ranching community five miles north of Lund in the southern part of White Pine County. When Mormons who migrated from Moroni, Utah established the town, they named it for William B. Preston. Preston was the presiding Bishop in 1897. A post office was established in Preston September 7, 1899 and served the community until August 31, 1952, when Ely became its mailing address.
Preston has maintained a tranquil existence as a ranching community through the years.
